Grandma’s recommendations for brunch in Calgary

Brunch has always been my favourite meal of the day. Honestly, what’s better than waking up on a Sunday morning and having a nice warm brunch at a cozy diner? Calgary has some great brunch places and whenever I visit I always try to go to my favourite ones. The city has really upped its brunch game in the past few years, and there seems to be new “Instagram-worthy” places popping up all of the time. In this post, I put together my top four recommendations for brunch in Calgary, along with my favourite menu items at each place.

1.Belmont Diner

Located in the trendy South West neighbourhood of Marda Loop, this hidden gem is the perfect brunch spot if you’re looking for authentic diner food, with a cozy and retro atmosphere. It’s popular among local residents, and there is usually quite a long wait time on weekend mornings. With limited seating and a small interior, the line-up is usually outside, so come prepared for the weather in the winter months! They do offer coffee outside and a seating area while you wait which is a nice touch. You can’t visit here without ordering their hash browns. If I was stranded on a desert island and could only live off one food item, they would be it. They also have great milkshakes and offer pancake art which is a huge hit for the kids.

Favourite menu items:
Belmont French Toast
Chocolate chip pancakes
Montreal Smoked Meat Hash

2. Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus

Not too far away from the Belmont Diner, you’ll find the Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus, a locally-owned restaurant known for their Dutch pancakes, the “pannenkoeken.” Pannenkoekens are similar to a crepe, in the sense that they are much thinner than a traditional pancake. The menu is overwhelming with so many tasty pannenkoken combinations that you can order. There is something for everyone, with both savoury and sweet options. The staff is always very friendly and although it can get very busy as well, the wait goes by fast. My tip for this restaurant is checking the hours of operation before you go, as they are closed on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. I have gone on both of those days and have been very sad that I couldn’t get my Pannenkoeken fix.

Sometimes I can’t decide if I want savoury or sweet, so I order both! This is the shredded potato, onion, and cheese and cinnamon roll pannenkoekens.

Favourite menu items:
Savoury – Shredded potato, onion, and cheese pannenkoeken
Sweet – Cinnamon Roll pannenkoeken
Sweet – Apple, cinnamon, and icing sugar

3. OEB

Living in the suburbs, I actually didn’t discover this downtown breakfast spot until recently. OEB has three Calgary locations: Bridgeland, Downtown and Mission. They also have locations across North America in Edmonton, Vancouver and Scottsdale Arizona. I have only been to the Mission location, on a Friday morning during the Christmas season. For how busy it was, we received our food very quickly and the service was really good. I need to go back here because I’ve only tried one thing from their menu, and they have endless delicious options to choose from.

What I tried:
Meat-less to say breakfast poutine

4. The Bro’Kin Yolk

With two Calgary locations, one in the deep South East, (this is where I grew up), and one in the North West, this farm to table restaurant is known for its fresh organic eggs, as the name suggests. I’ve been to both locations, they are both relatively the same size, and ALWAYS super busy. The unique thing that Bro’Kin Yolk offers, is a wait-list system. Before you head out the door for brunch, call the restaurant and ask how long the wait is. You can add your name to the list and they’ll text you when your table is almost ready. I’ve used this system every time that I’ve gone and it’s really great! They have a wide variety of menu items and offer unique drinks such as a lavender latte which I enjoyed the last time I went.
