The start of a new decade

At the start of this last decade, in 2010, I was 14. I was in grade 8/9 and I had no idea what the next 10 years would have in store for me. I never make New Years resolutions, but I have been thinking about what my life will look like heading into the 2020 decade.

In the next 10 years, I will likely get married, buy a house, and have children. This is crazy. It feels like just yesterday I was graduating elementary school and the only thing I had to worry about was how I could convince my parents to let my best friend sleep over. An aside, my best friend and I used to make elaborate PowerPoints with animations and voice overs listing all of the reasons why we should have a sleep over and we would present them to our parents. Sometimes it worked, probably just because our parents felt bad that we didn’t have a life and this is what we spent our spare time doing.

Other notable things I didn’t have to worry about 10 years ago:

-Taxes
-Rent
-How expensive cheese is

To kick-off the 2020 decade, Ahmed and I are going to Greece in May, which is really exciting. We’re gong to Athens for a week and we’re still deciding which other islands we want to visit while we’re there. This trip is partly to celebrate our six year anniversary, and partly because we won a “free” vacation to “anywhere” in the world that we haven’t been able to use until now. The quotation marks are significant. This “free” vacation has been very difficult to use. Ahmed and I haven’t had the chance to travel very much together, since we started dating in high school and then spent the next four years either in university or living on the other side of the world from each other. This will be a well-deserved holiday for both of us.

In 2024, Ahmed and I will celebrate 10 years of being together! I think we’ll probably be married by then, at least I would hope so! It’s fascinating to think about how much I’ve accomplished in the past decade, and how much I still have left to accomplish. I think I’m most looking forward to starting a family within the next 10 years, and hopefully spending more time with my younger siblings who will be teenagers in this next decade! I can’t believe how fast they’re growing up.

I think the start of a new decade can be a fresh start in a lot of ways. Whether you want to start a new job this decade, go back to school, start a family, or accomplish a lifelong dream, the start of a new decade is a great opportunity. Instead of making New Years resolutions that you’ll never keep, think of setting attainable goals, or looking at life with a new perspective. I can’t wait to see what this next decade has in store, and I hope every one has a great start to the new year!
